Collection regarding Oliver Cromwell 1640-1970.

The collection consists chiefly of portraits of Cromwell, including engravings, drawings, and magazine photographs. There are also portraits of his contemporaries, battle scenes, group pictures, and town views and maps from his time. Manuscripts include a 1649 order to pay his troops, a 1651 indenture, a 1642 order by Henry Clifford, 5th Earl Cumberland to pay two men for secret service, a brief note and document, 1659, from Richard Cromwell, as well as photocopies, transcripts and a facsimile. A variety of clippings regarding Cromwell, a list of engravers of his portraits, a letter, 1907 June 4, Evered & Co., London to Cox & Sons, Bridgeport, art catalogs, and a plaster of a death mask complete the collection.

Richard Cromwell was the Lord Protector of England and eldest surviving son of Oliver Cromwell; the recipient is addressed as "Madam" and "Dear Heart," and is probably Cromwell's wife.
